Default Analog Radio

Analogue TV signals might have kicked the bucket last year, but analogue radio still has a good few years. That is why radio industry insiders are looking for ways to make the transition easier. I've just read that they are coming up with a scrappage scheme that they would pattern after the car scheme created by Alistair Darling who gave drivers the chance to collect money if they trade their vehicle in for something that is more environment friendly and emits less pollution.

This time around, they are offering a 20% on digital radios.

That's quite sizable, taking into consideration that there are still around 100 million people using analogue radios!

Yes, it is. But then, you would have to trade your old analogue radio in the house to get the 20% discount.

I think that's a great idea.

It's much like the subsidy they gave when the analogue switchoff happened for TV.

It will happen in 5 years' time. 2015. But as it appears now, it might take longer than that.

Again, it is the older set who will be most affected. For one, it is the senior and the elderly that listens to most radio programmes. Yet with digital being a new technology, the adoption rate might be fewer than we'd all like.

Who will foot the bill on this one? The government?

Well, nothing concrete yet. The proposal is still just that, a proposal. But Digital Radio UK, which has been tasked to inform people about the analogue switchoff and basically move it along, is currently in talks with retailers around the country.

Hmmmn... what will happen to the old radios? I hope that for the environment's sake, they don't dump it in some landfill or something!
