Yeah, Sky raised its prices, unless you switch to SkyTalk, their phone and broadband package.

I guess it's because their broadband only service has not turned in a profit? Sky, according to some industry sources, wants it's broadband division to have its own profit and loss responsibilities, but how could one profit when entry-level service is free and 16mbps only earns £10 per subscriber???

Well, SkyTalk has been very profitable. It has never been able to leverage its popularity to get more paying customers though. It is estimated that broadband ARPU has actually fallen to £7.27 in the 3rd quarter of 2008, compared to a year ago.

So the raise in broadband fees will actually work two-fold for sky? If you don't upgrade to Skytalk, they get an increase of 5 quids per subscriber. If one upgrades to SkyTalk, the ratio between its free and paying subscribers would be better, thereby also increasing SkyTalk's ARPU!

Actually, I find it counterintuitive. It's not for everyone to sign up for complicated bundles. Sky has a history of offering simple packages. Sky Talk could very well alienate some of Sky's loyal subscribers: those who are availing of broadband only or phone only. I don't know if this would work!

Yeah, some operators have actually unbundled their packages in an effort to gain more subscribers. I wonder if Sky has thought this through enough?

Well, Sky is encouraging their broadband subscribers to pay for SkyTalk. That price increase is just too much, in my opinion.

I agree, the price increase actually narrows the gap between availing of SkyTalk and a broadband only package. But I still doubt if people will bite the bait.
