| Installing Sky The equipment that you would need for installing basic Sky Digital are the Sky digital box, Sky minidish, cable, cable clips, 4 coach bolts, 2 F connectors, and self amalgamating tape. The coach bolts will ensure proper attachment of the dish to the wall, while the tape will make the LNB connections waterproof. First off, you would need to assemble the Sky minidish, carefully following the instructions included with the minidish package. Once you have put together your minidish, it is ready for alignment. For Sky, you would need to align your dish at 28.2 degrees East of South. If you have problems, ask your neighbours if they have Sky installed and take note of where their own dish points to. Once you have the minidish securely attached, you will need to run the cable from the dish to your receiver. Start cabling from the dish working down to your receiver, making sure you clip the cable at every 50cm. Do not run the cable diagonally across a wall, but instead run it horizontally or vertically. Once you’re done, you should strip the end of the cable, peeling off the outer side first, and the exposing about a few centimeters of the braid and then the copper core for another few centimeters, like this: ![]() Twist the braid and pull it back on itself, making sure that no braid touches the copper core. If any part of the braid does touch the copper core, you will not get any signal because of the short it produces! Twist on the F connector and connect it to the low noise block and receiver. You are now ready to connect the digital box to your TV by following the instructions provided with the digibox! Align the Dish Aligning the dish is actually the most difficult part of installing Sky. You would need the help of another family member or a friend. One of you would need to align the dish and the other would be checking the TV for signal. You would need to switch on the digibox, you will see the message “No signal being received” flashed on screen. Press service and then press 6. Two signal meters will then pop out of the screen, one for signal strength and the other for signal quality. One tip is to focus on signal quality: meaning that you are getting signals from the Sky satellite. Move the dish around until the signal strength displays 50%. Remember that you would need to move the dish slowly at about 1millimeter at a time for about a few seconds before moving it again. This is because to have a good signal strength, you would need to be about 0.1 degree of the satellite’s location. After pinpointing and positioning for a decent signal strength, you must move subtle and small movements to the dish both horizontally and vertically to find the best signal quality possible. When you have 50% signal quality, you can tighten the dish, tape the connection on the LNB. Installing Sky: Part 2 – Some other tips Remember that installing Sky, especially aligning the dish, is not as easy as it sounds. If you have free installation offers from Sky, we suggest you take it. If you don’t, however, you can save a lot of quids from a do it yourself installation. If you are not successful in aligning the dish, you can call a professional to do the alignment for you. Highest possible charge for the alignment would be £35, and saves you the trouble. Installing Sky Plus Once you have the standard Sky set up okay, you can easily install Sky Plus. To do so, you would need to change the low noise blocker on the dish to a quad LNB. Quad LNB enables you to make use of the two tuners integrated in the Sky Plus receiver. These two tuners work independently of each other and uses a separate feed from the dish. While you can use a Sky Plus receiver with just one feed input, you will not be able to record anything! You would need to run another cable from one of the spare ports on the LNB and connect it to the Sky Plus receiver to have the two feeds. To activate the receiver, you can contact Sky at 08702 404040 so they could activate the card for you. This makes sense because there are not additional charges for Sky Plus if you are subscribed to standard Sky. How to Pair a Viewing Card to Your Digibox Remember that a Sky Viewing Card will not work until you have paired it properly with your digibox. Sky has made some changes where it is no longer possible to transfer a Sky Viewing Card from one Sky box to another. To properly pair your viewing card to your digibox, follow these steps: Press 'SERVICES' on your Sky remote control, this will help you bring up the “hidden menu” you need to pair your card to your box. After that, press '4' and then press '0', and then '1', then choose 'SELECT'. After these steps, you should be looking at a new menu called 'Installers Menu'. From this menu, press '6' or 'New Installation'. What follows is a series of on-screen instructions for you to follow. Take note that the box will perform a scan and then a call back. For both of these to succeed, you would need to make sure that the viewing card is properly inserted into the machine and that your box is connected to a phone line. Call backs are notorious for failing, so keep trying until you receive an 'Installation Complete' message. If this does not happen, contact Sky for more details and for technical support. Once the call-back is finished, you would need to give Sky a call at 08702 404040 to complete the installation. |
