Default BSkyB attacks Ofcom over TV plan

Sky is seething over Ofcom's announcements saying that the regulator would force it to sell its programming to rivals like BT and Virgin at a flat rate to be determined by Ofcom.

Sky said that it will launch a legal counterattack against Ofcom if the regulator proceeds with its plans.

I laud Ofcom's decision on this matter. I think that Virgin and BT were right in saying that Sky has been suppressing competition. Besides, it's not as if Sky will be giving away content, they will be paid for it.

For my part, I think that Sky has the right to bristle over it. Ofcom said that their sports and movies would be part of the content which will be shared. I think this will erode Sky's competitive advantage in terms of content.

I am sure Setanta would have welcomed the move!

LOL! I agree. Setanta recently filed for adminstration because of its football brouhaha. If this was in place long before now, Setanta wouldn't be in so much financial trouble!

I hear that Ofcom's proposed rates are up to 30% lower than what Sky is currently charging. Ouch. I can see why Sky is so vehement in fighting it!

Well, I think Ofcom is wrong with this. I agree with Sky when they say that Ofcom is effectively telling Sky to subsidize Virgin and BT. The thing is, they have their investments made on these programmes, and forcing them to sell it cheap is below the belt!

I actually have no strong opinion on this matter except for could Ofcom do that? I mean could it intervene like this?

Well, if Sky is bristling, Virgin and Tiscali are having a laugh at their expense. Both companies are welcoming the Ofcom decision saying that it boosts competition in the industry!

I think that's what Sky wants to find out as well. As a regulator, Ofcom should show no bias. And it seems that it is doing this in the interest of open competition!
